Freezer repair for Sub-Zero columns and freezer drawers

A Sub-Zero freezer that drifts above zero seldom hides a mystery. Air stops moving, the coil ices over, a sensor reads wrong, or the sealed system loses its charge. SubZero Repair Denver works through those in that order, cheapest suspect first.

Empty white freezer compartment with a louvered air vent on the back wall and shelf supports on both sides.
The louvered vent high on the back wall is where the fan blows coil-cold air into the compartment. Packages stacked against it starve everything below.

Which freezer you have changes the visit

Freezer columns
Tall integrated freezers behind a cabinet panel. The panel and the grille have to come off before any part can be reached, so tell us whether yours is a column when you call.
Freezer drawers under a refrigerator
The bottom drawers of an over-and-under built-in. Most full-size Sub-Zero models cool the freezer separately from the fresh-food section, so a warm drawer under a cold refrigerator points at the freezer's own fan, coil or defrost parts.
Undercounter freezers and freezer drawers
Compact units with the machinery packed into the base, breathing through the grille at the floor. They have their own page, because their weak points differ.

What the $89 visit checks, in order

  1. Temperature, with our own probe in a drawer or on a shelf, not just the display.
  2. The evaporator fan: does it spin, and does it stop when the door opens.
  3. The coil behind the back panel: clear, frosted in patches, or a solid block.
  4. The defrost heater, its thermostat and the sensors the control relies on.
  5. The condenser and its fan: dust, airflow, how hot the coil runs.
  6. The door or drawer gasket, tested with paper all the way round.
  7. Only after all that, the compressor and the sealed system.

Typical ranges for freezer repairs

Part and labor on a Sub-Zero freezer
JobTypical range
Visit and diagnosis$89, credited
Fan motor, in the freezer or at the condenser$310–$730
Defrost heater, termination thermostat or sensor$290–$670
Door or drawer gasket$280–$700
Control board$450–$910
Compressor or sealed system$1,450–$3,060

A range is a guide, not a quote. The actual figure comes after diagnosis, you decide before anything is replaced, and the visit fee is subtracted from it.

Household freezers only

Reach-in and walk-in freezers in restaurants and shops are a different trade with different parts. We work on Sub-Zero units in homes, so for a commercial box a refrigeration contractor is the right call.

Two questions about freezers

Can I defrost the freezer myself to get it going again?

You can, and it often buys a few days: switch it off, empty it, prop the door and towel up the melt. But if the coil iced over because a defrost part failed, the ice grows back within days. Tell us you did it, because a freshly thawed coil hides the evidence we look for.

Why does the freezer seem to run all evening?

A freezer that cannot finish a cycle runs longest when the kitchen is warmest and the door opens most, which is during and after dinner. With Xcel's time-of-use rate those are the expensive hours, 5 to 9 p.m. on weekdays, so a freezer that never seems to rest is worth a call to (720) 770-4189.
