Undercounter refrigerators, freezers and drawers

Undercounter Sub-Zero units live in the hardest spot in a kitchen: under a counter, often beside a dishwasher, drawing air through a grille a few inches off the floor. SubZero Repair Denver repairs the door-front models and the refrigerator and freezer drawers in islands and base cabinets.

With the base cover off, the compressor, wiring and lines all sit in this low compartment, reached from the front and tested in place.

Where an undercounter unit breathes

A full-size built-in carries its condenser up top, behind the grille over the doors. An undercounter model or a drawer unit carries it in the base: air for the condenser comes and goes through the grille at floor level. Anything that crowds that grille makes the compressor run longer. A thick runner, a kick plate fitted tight during a remodel, pet hair and plain dust all do it, which is why most visits start with the grille coming off.

What wears out on drawers and compact units

  • Drawer gaskets. Each drawer seals against the cabinet with a gasket on its front. A corner that has flattened lets kitchen air in and cold out, and that corner often shows a little frost or sweat.
  • Slides. A slide bent under heavy bottles leaves the drawer riding low on one side, so the gasket never meets the cabinet evenly.
  • Fans. Air has to move past the evaporator inside and across the condenser below. If either fan slows, the drawer feels cool rather than cold.
  • Sensors and controls. A sensor reading too warm makes the unit overcool; one reading too cold lets it drift up while the display looks fine.

If one drawer sits warm and you want to narrow it down first, start with drawer units that run warm.

Undercounter questions

Can I clean the grille myself?

Yes. Switch the unit off at its switch or the breaker, take the grille off, and vacuum it and the first inch of coil you can see with a soft brush. Do not comb or bend the fins, and do not push dust further in. If the coil behind is matted solid, leave it for the visit.

Do you repair beverage centers as well?

Yes. A Sub-Zero beverage center is laid out like the other undercounter models, machinery and grille at floor level, so the same checks apply to it. Wine storage is its own subject with its own controls. Tell us which unit you have when you ring (720) 770-4189.
